Clarence St Theatre sits on a property previously owned by the Hamilton Operatic Society. The society started opening its performances to the public in the 1950s and the theatre has played host to numerous small scale events that have around 100 people. Through the years, the fly tower, auditorium, and foyer were added to increase its seating capacity and to be able to cater to larger shows. The Hamilton Operatic Society managed the theatre until the year 1997 and they offered venue and costume hire. By 2000, Hamilton City Council took over the operations of the theatre.
