Te Papa Store

These Ngā uku taonga pūoro or Traditional clay musical treasures are hand made by Keil Caskey @ukurataonga. We think the only thing more beautiful than the items themselves is Keil's description of the taonga: "At the time of early occupation taonga of all kinds were seen as collectable objects and appeared in museums and private collections around the world. Because of this their original purposes and contexts were lost, albeit only for a time. It is now a growing pool of knowledge that I have attempted to contribute to since 2014 in the way the instruments are made and how they are heard. The embellishments adorn the taonga pūoro and allude to Māori values such as whakapapa (genealogy) and mauri (the principle of life) yet the true charm of these musical treasures are known only when their voices can be heard." Available online now along with Keil's full kōrero, or visit us in store for the full collection. #taongapuoro #taonga #maoriculture #maoriart

Te Papa Store is a local gift shop in Wellington, New Zealand that helps promote Māori values. The owner added traditional clay musical instruments to their offered products with the hopes of raising awareness of the almost forgotten treasures. They display the lovely works of Keil Caskey which are mostly flutes customized to exude a particular mood. With their special tuning process, they were able to personalize each piece either conveying a gentle mood suited for prayers, lullabies and meditation or present a cheery and uplifting mood with its vibrant theme.

“Wonderful shop full of craftwork by local artisans. I first stopped by on a day that had turned cold, when my baby was little and I’d forgotten his hat at home. I found a lovely colourful knitted cap that fit perfectly and kept him cozy for months after. Do recommend for gifts for the whole family.” –Angela Wells
